You’ll know it’s time to replace your anode rod when it’s considerably corroded or has less than ½ inch of material left. Inspect it at least once a year; if you see more than a third of the rod gone, it’s time for a change. Installation involves turning off the water heater, draining some water, and unscrewing the old rod, using a socket wrench to secure the new one tightly in the tank.
